How We Design Charms That Tell Stories

At make n’ believe, we believe jewelry should do more than just sparkle.  It should spark. Every charm and bead we design begins with a big question:

How can this tiny treasure carry a story that inspires kids to dream bigger?

That question drives everything, from the first sketch to the moment a child fastens their bracelet and imagines themselves stepping into a role: a scientist, an artist, a musician or even a superhero. This is the behind-the-scenes journey of how our charms become more than accessories.  They become invitations to play, dream and believe.

Finding the Spark: Inspiration from Women Who Dared

The heart of every collection lies in the women who inspired it. We don’t just choose random symbols or designs; we start with stories of real women who reshaped their fields and proved that kids can grow up to be anything they want.

For example,

Heartbeat Hero began with women in medicine, like Dr. Nina Braunwald, one of the first women to perform open-heart surgery, and countless female doctors who heal with both courage and compassion. That’s why you’ll see heart-shaped charms and platelet beads in the set. 

Jungle Gems took shape after studying zoologists and conservationists like Jane Goodall, Dian Fossey and Patricia Wright, who lived among animals to protect them. A rhinestone chimp wasn’t just a “cute animal.”  It was a nod to their bravery in dedicating their lives to wildlife. 

Butterflies and Brushes drew from artists like Frida Kahlo and Georgia O’Keeffe, who taught us that self-expression can transform how we see the world. That’s why butterflies (a symbol of transformation) and a rainbow of colors became central to its design. 

We constantly ask: What symbol will a child instantly connect with? What object can capture the spirit of a profession or passion in a playful, sparkly way? Those questions guide our earliest sketches.

From Research to Rough Sketches

Once we know the story we want to tell, our designers get to work. Early sketches rarely look glamorous.  They’re scribbles in notebooks, doodles on scraps of paper or quick shapes in digital programs. Most often, they involve crayons. At this stage, the goal is clarity, not perfection.

For example:

• A stethoscope sketch for Heartbeat Hero turned into a heart-shaped pendant because kids recognize hearts instantly, while still tying back to medicine.
• A star for Galactic Dreamer was too simple on its own, so we added rhinestones to a rocket ship to better capture the thrill of space exploration.
• A book outline for Ink & Imagination transformed into a tiny, jewel-toned “storybook charm” that kids can recognize immediately as a symbol of writing and storytelling.

Our design mantra: If a child can’t spot it and say what it is in two seconds, it needs work.

Play-Tested and Kid-Approved

We believe design has to be tested by the toughest critics… kids themselves. When prototypes arrive, we put them in the hands of children (which, most of the time, are our own girls) and simply watch. Do their eyes light up? Do they start pretending right away? Do they recognize the symbol without explanation? Do they start asking questions that spark conversations?

Kids don’t fake enthusiasm. If they start creating a story (like pretending to bake cupcakes with the Sweet Creations Bead Kit or imagining themselves as stargazers with the Galactic Dreamer Bead Kit), we know the design works. Sometimes the goal isn’t instant recognition but sparking curiosity and giving parents a chance to share the story behind the symbol. A whisk charm may open the door to talk about famous pastry chefs. A star bead may spark questions about astronauts. The jewelry becomes a conversation starter as much as a play cue.

Adding the Sparkle Factor

Symbols alone aren’t enough. Kids love bold color, rhinestones and shine, but too much can feel gaudy or overwhelming. We balance sparkle with meaning.

• Colors: Each palette ties to the theme. Galactic Dreamer uses silvers, blues, and deep purples (colors of the night sky). Sweet Creations leans into candy pinks and frosting whites. Jungle Gems embraces greens and earthy tones.
• Materials: We primarily use zinc alloy and acrylic—safe, lightweight and durable enough for endless play.
• Texture: Smooth surfaces make pieces comfortable, while 3-D charms give kids something tactile to hold and admire.

Every rhinestone placement, every glitter accent, is tested for safety and durability. A charm isn’t just “pretty.” It has to survive countless adventures.

Storytelling in Miniature

The hardest part of our job? Telling a big story in a tiny symbol. A 20mm charm has to do the work of an entire profession, passion or life story.

How do we do it?

• Simplify: We focus on one bold symbol, not many. A butterfly says “transformation.” A heart says “healing.” A star says “dreaming big.”
• Layer Meaning: The sparkle, shape and color together tell a richer story.
• Pair Symbols with Stories: Every collection comes with an educational insert, so kids don’t just see the charm—they learn a little about the meaning behind it.

Designed for Play, Built for Possibility

Our goal isn’t to make jewelry that sits in a box. We want kids to wear, play and imagine with every piece. That’s why we design with pretend play in mind:

• Heartbeat Hero instantly becomes part of a play doctor’s kit.
• Tennessee Twinkle transforms into microphones for living room concerts.
• Galactic Dreamer sparks rocket launches in the backyard.

When we see a child wearing a bracelet and suddenly pretending to be a scientist or performer, we know we’ve done our job. Jewelry isn’t the end product.  It’s the start of play.

Parents often ask us: Why jewelry? Why not dolls or costumes? The answer is simple: jewelry bridges worlds. It’s small enough to wear daily, stylish enough to feel “grown up” and playful enough to spark imagination.

A necklace can go from school picture day to the backyard to bedtime stories—always carrying a reminder of confidence and possibility.
